Introduction to Season 21

Season 21 includes responses to In the Blink of an Eye: Media & Movement exhibition.

Our world is constantly in motion. Since the earliest cave paintings, people have been fascinated by the representation of movement. This exhibition explores the relationship between media and movement, revealing how artists, photographers, inventors and scientists have responded to the challenges of capturing and simulating movement, creating images which transcend the boundaries of art, science and entertainment.

Alongside items from the National Collection, artists Quayola and Memo Akten present Forms, an interactive video installation inspired by Eadweard Muybridge’s seminal studies of movement. Anne-Marie Culhane and Bob Levene have created Time Frame, a video installation filmed at the UK Olympic training centre in Loughborough. Together, these artworks reflect the fascinating story of media and movement.

This exhibition is the National Media Museum’s response to imove New Worlds: Many Routes to Yorkshire partnership, Legacy Trust UK’s cultural programme for Yorkshire. It is also part of London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
